“I’M BEGINNING TO TAKE this personally,”’ Trudy read, her assessing blue eyes scanning the note from Candy, which she’d snagged from under a windshield wiper. “‘You need to call me, Officer. The sooner, the better.”’ Glad for the distraction, Trudy glanced at Truman. “Another note from Candy.”

“Thanks,” he said gruffly.

“I wasn’t really following you,” she began, unable to tamp down her embarrassment once the cruiser started moving.

Truman’s eyes stayed on the windshield as he guided them between yellow cabs, taking a straight shot downtown on Broadway, through heavy traffic. Under the lights—mostly from theater marquees and headlights—the cityscape was as bright as daylight. “Whatever happened to teaming up? To solving the case together? Remember? I make the arrest, and you get the story?”

Things had become so much more complex. Trudy glanced away from the windshield, tuning out the dispatch radio he’d left running. “I would have called before now, but after the way you left my apartment…”

He shot her a long glance, his eyes saying, What choice did I have? When the stoplight nearest Penn Station turned red, he uttered a frustrated groan. Braking, he glanced across the seat, and when their gazes meshed, her heart lurched. She’d never realized she could miss someone so much in just a few days. “You could have called me,” he said. “Or come by the precinct.”

She thought of the days she’d spent in the office, hedging whenever Dimi approached her. Other than the planned public relations stops at precincts slated for her and Truman in the future, she’d said she thought she had enough material to begin writing the article. “You could have called me,” she countered.

“You’re the one who needed time.”

“I was going to call,” she assured, keeping her voice calm and wondering what he’d do if he knew the depth of emotion she suspected had lain dormant and untapped inside her. What if, like a floodgate, something opened inside her and she needed him too much? She feared she’d be overwhelmed if she gave her whole self. Was that really what Truman wanted? Absolutely everything? What if you loved someone that much, and something happened to them…what if they died? Or left you? She pushed away the thoughts. “I was going to call you after the visit with my family this weekend, really Truman. I’ve…missed you.”

“Is it really that hard to say?”

“No.” She repeated the words firmly. “I missed you.”

“You don’t have to see your family alone, you know.”

No, but she wasn’t sure she was ready to have Truman meet them. “It’ll be fine. I’m afraid I’ve given you the wrong impression. They’re really nice people…”

“I’ve never doubted that.” He traced the steering wheel with a finger, his expression thoughtful. “But just because they’re nice in some ways doesn’t mean you got what you needed from them, Trudy. And what you need is all that matters to me.”

Wow. How many men really said things such as that? One in a million. Her breath caught. She wanted to believe him. “I know…I
